Korean American pianist Laura Poe is a highly sought-after artist and collaborator, celebrated for her work as a pianist, vocal coach, and educator. Based in Düsseldorf, Germany, she is a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Renowned for her expertise as a répétiteur and vocal coach, she has worked with leading institutions including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, De Nationale Opera (Amsterdam), Gran Teatre del Liceu, and the Semperoper Dresden, where she made her professional conducting debut, leading 19 performances of Dido and Aeneas.
As a recitalist, Laura has appeared with distinguished artists such as Lisette Oropesa, Julia Bullock, Sasha Cooke, Paul Appleby, and Deborah Voigt, with whom she performed live on New York’s classical radio station WQXR. She was also featured in the BBC2 documentary What Makes a Great Soprano with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. A laureate of the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition, where she received third prize in 2009. Laura has performed at major festivals including the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Ravinia Steans Institute, Bard Summerscape, Glimmerglass Opera, and Music Academy of the West, as well as at venues such as Alice Tully Hall, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Lucerne Festival, and in Trinidad and Tobago.
A passionate advocate for new music, Laura has been deeply involved in numerous world and European premieres. She has collaborated with composers Ellen Reid, Julia Adolphe, and John Adams, serving as pianist, arranger, and editor for several of his works. She assisted Adams on his Grammy-nominated recording of Girls of the Golden West with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as a radio broadcast of The Death of Klinghoffer with the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. She also created the original piano-vocal score for Antony and Cleopatra and edited Girls of the Golden West for its European premiere in Amsterdam.
Dedicated to mentoring the next generation of singers and pianists, Laura has served as an Associate Vocal Coach at The Juilliard School, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Music Academy of the West, Aspen Music Festival and School, AIMS in Graz, and Si parla, si canta in Urbania, Italy. Alongside her work at the opera house, she maintains a private coaching studio for both singers and pianists.
A graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Laura trained with many of the world’s leading musicians, conductors, and directors. She holds a Graduate Diploma in Collaborative Piano from The Juilliard School, a Master’s degree in Accompanying and Chamber Music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Bachelor’s degree in Instrumental Music Education from the same institution, which honored her with the inaugural Distinguished Alumni Award in Performance in 2015
