There was a cameraman who would often say “stones” after the director yelled “rolling.” Sometimes I did not know if I could start playing because I expected to hear both words. There is actually very good pizza in Blaibach, Germany. I was most impressed with their local restaurant. The entire crew traveled from all over Germany for this project. Entering the center/practice studios and making reservations are easily controlled with an app. At this rehearsal center, there are 3 studios available — 2 August Förster uprights and 1 Yamaha baby grand piano. The studios are soundproof (with options of connecting recording equipment in two of the rooms), provide cellphone charging centers and free wifi available. It is a cozy rehearsal center with one bathroom and a small waiting area in addition to its 3 practice studios. I visited this center 3 times and tried out all three rooms - Studio 2 with the baby grand is the best option. Practicing during COVID: I made sure to clean the keys and piano bench adjuster before AND after practicing. I also practiced with a mask on. I have never played a Steingraeber & Söhne piano before this special trip. This family-owned business makes its home in Bayreuth, Germany and recently celebrated its 200th anniversary. My childhood piano was a Schafer & Sons piano so seeing this made me smile. Well, this piano was one of the most temperamental pianos I have ever played. I found its color palette to be quite extreme from top to bottom. From my research, I discovered that this company experiments with many color and sound options. They have created an option called the “Mozart Rail” in which key depth in the grand pianos is reduced to 8mm from the normal 10 mm. Therefore the distance from hammer to string is shortened to 36mm, making softer articulations possible, together with quicker repetition. It also gives the concert grand a more intimate sound, a Mozart-like silvery sound. As we experimented with the height of the piano lid, I was surprised to be able to move it up and down with such ease. I highly doubted it was due to my upper body strength and later found out that they have built concert grands with a super-light, sound-projecting lid. While walking to the concert hall, I stopped many times to take pictures. My favorite - A8 D1 from Hamburg’s Kunsthalle Museum The huge doors consisting of 2 doors like D4 & D6 are very common in Berlin’s Mitte. The majority of these doors are from Amsterdam. My favorite is C6. I thanked my very patient travel companion with a personalized postcard collage of these doors after our trip. Because of all the wonderful colors, I had a hard time finding a brown one. The neon doors were my favorite to discover and I screamed with delight each time I found one. I visited the Georgian House Museum in Edinburgh one year and noticed that most of their doors are brown or black. I asked a docent at the museum why Dublin’s doors have so much color and Edinburgh’s did not. His answer? Because they have religion in Edinburgh and Dublin does not.
